In “Original Santa Maria Style BBQ on Kauai,” in The Garden Island, catch up with the owners of Recessions Original Santa Maria Style BBQ, featuring a name that “is a nod toward the economic downturn and the family keeps prices low so people can enjoy filling meals” and refers to a style of BBQ Forbes magazine says is the “fifth style of American BBQ.”

Last week, in her On the Farm column, “Money for Moloaa,” Marta met with Moloaa farmers as they meet up with local politicians to generate funding for new irrigation systems.

This week, It’s lilikoi season! In this Sunday’s edition, learn about the purple passion fruit grown at Yoshii Farm and how to make Jean Marie Josselin’s Lilikoi Mint Chiffon Pie.

Besides Amazon, Tasting Kauai: Restaurants is now available in paperback at The Feral Pig, Orchid Alley Kauai and Namahana Cafe. We’ll be adding more locations this month. “White ‘sugarloaf’ pineapple is happening at Olana Organic Farm!” Says owner and farmer Tim O’Connor. “We should have a good supply into August.

“Our other farm-fresh produce currently available are, Green onion, Tomatoes (cherry red, yellow pear, mixed), Avocado, large thin skin, summer style, Beets (red), Carrots, Turnips (white, red, Pak choi (baby green, baby purple, Bok choy (medium), Mustard greens (red, green or mix), Collards, Chard (Swiss and Rainbow), Kale (curly, lacinato, red Russian, red curly), Arugula, Mint, Thyme, Rosemary, Oregano, Parsley (Italian, curly), Basil (sweet Italian, lemon, Thai), Chives, Kaffir lime (leaf and fruit), Lilikoi and Guava.”

First Annual RumFest at RumFire Poipu Beach

Sheraton Kauai Resort presents its First Annual RumFest at RumFire Poipu Beach to celebrate National Rum Day. On Friday, August 16 at 5:30 p.m., guests will enjoy the resort’s open-air Ocean Courtyard, which will feature Hawaii-made rums, island music and heavy pupu (appetizers) from the resort’s signature restaurant, RumFire Poipu Beach. A silent auction will be held during the festivities to benefit the Kauai Humane Society.

Socialize around the Ocean Courtyard’s fire pits and sample with local premium rum at RumFest tasting stations. Featured are Kauai’s own Koloa Rum Co., as well as Old Lahaina, Maui Rum and Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum – all produced in the islands. There will be more than 15 varieties available at the event and you can enjoy a cocktail from your favorite. Tastings are complemented by an array of pupu from RumFire’s kitchen, including Lemongrass Rum-Glazed Chicken Wings, Grilled Steak with Pappadew Pepper Relish and Seared Shrimp Sticks with Pineapple Rum Cocktail Sauce.
