Keoki’s Paradise

Keoki’s Paradise has live music every Sunday through Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. On Thursday through Saturday the have live music from 5 to 7 p.m. and again from 8 to 10 p.m. They do a big band the first Friday of every month. Revival will play in February; March, Greenstone Project; April, Pono Breez. Keoki’s is hosting an online hula pie contest so make sure you like Keoki’s Paradise on Facebook. They’ll also feature a hula pie flavor of the month to go along with the original mac nut and the mint chocolate chip.

George of the Jungle

“Robert and I have discovered ‘George of the Jungle’, the food truck next to Healthy Hut in Kilauea. The owner is this sweet young guy, a former chef from New York with a specialty in sauces. Kauai Juice Co. opened their store on Jan. 7. You may be aware of their Kauai Kombucha or Kale Chips, but now you can get single servings of cold-pressed juice, or juice packs for a cleanse. You can also buy glass straws or a kombucha starter kit. If you’re not familiar with juice cleanses, they cover that extensively on the Kauai Juice Co. website. There’s also a lengthy explanation on what kombucha tea is. Visit them at their kitchen shop, in the Dragon Building in Kapaa to get any of their delicious and potent, cold pressed juices, medicinal shots, cold brewed coffee, nut milks, and all flavors of Kombucha. First Annual RumFest at RumFire Poipu Beach

Sheraton Kauai Resort presents its First Annual RumFest at RumFire Poipu Beach to celebrate National Rum Day. On Friday, August 16 at 5:30 p.m., guests will enjoy the resort’s open-air Ocean Courtyard, which will feature Hawaii-made rums, island music and heavy pupu (appetizers) from the resort’s signature restaurant, RumFire Poipu Beach. A silent auction will be held during the festivities to benefit the Kauai Humane Society.

Socialize around the Ocean Courtyard’s fire pits and sample with local premium rum at RumFest tasting stations. Featured are Kauai’s own Koloa Rum Co., as well as Old Lahaina, Maui Rum and Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum – all produced in the islands. There will be more than 15 varieties available at the event and you can enjoy a cocktail from your favorite. Tastings are complemented by an array of pupu from RumFire’s kitchen, including Lemongrass Rum-Glazed Chicken Wings, Grilled Steak with Pappadew Pepper Relish and Seared Shrimp Sticks with Pineapple Rum Cocktail Sauce. Kalapaki Joe’s is buying your Thanksgiving dinner this year. You just need to cook it! Listen to the KONG FM 93.5 morning drive with Marc & Ron on November 19 and 20 between 6 and 9 a.m. for a chance to win a complete Thanksgiving dinner that includes Raw Whole Turkey, Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, Cranberries, Pumpkin Pie and Gravy. Winners can pick up their dinner at Kalapaki Joe’s in Lihue on Tuesday, November 20th between 2 and 6 p.m.

THE NATIONAL GARDENING ASSOCIATION is offering Youth Garden Grants through Home Depot. Five winners will receive gift cards valued at $1,000, and 95 winners will receive $500 gift cards, to purchase gardening materials and supplies from their local Home Depot store specific to the needs of their program. Deadline is Dec. 3, 2012. Schools, youth groups, community centers, camps, clubs, treatment facilities and inter-generational groups throughout the United States are eligible. Applicants must plan to garden with at least 15 children between the ages of 3 and 18 years. For more information about these grants, check out the Kids Gardening website. FISKARS’ Project Orange Thumb seeks applications for Community Garden Grants and Makeovers to help communities achieve their neighborhood beautification goals and support healthy, sustainable food sources. Nonprofit organizations in the United States and Canada are invited to apply for ten grants of $5,000 and a complete garden makeover. Deadline to apply is Dec. 15, 2012.
