NEWS:

“I have a little seed of Aloha to share,” says Elvrine Chow, owner of Heavenly Hakus.” After we closed down at the Garden Fair because of the rain and wind I had so much flowers left!! Plus Jamie had read your article about me and had wanted to have a haku making lesson although her auntie had come by earlier to say she probably wasn’t coming due to the storm.

“Well, Jamie showed up just as we were leaving. I had a thought! Let’s call the Kauai Museum. Maybe we can use their courtyard for the one on one class.

“Director Jane Gray, Noreen, and staff set up tables and chairs inside the main gallery and extra chairs for visitors to watch and/or join us there. Larry Rivera’s daughter played slack key and Uncle Charlie was sewing his fishing nets, too. Continue Reading →

School Gardens in Hawaii

A 2012 study conducted by the Hawaii Farm to School and School Garden Hui found that there are 168 school gardens across the state with 21,577 participating students, 830 teachers, 1,500 volunteers, on 30 acres of land! Fourteen schools on Kauai participated. That’s great news because this past week, I’ve been checking out the Hawaii DOE cafeteria food photos Facebook page, and the food our kids are being served I wouldn’t give to my dogs!

Hawaii school garden students grew and harvested healthy snacks; created farmers markets; integrated science; math; social studies; literature and arts; and learned social skills and teamwork. Research indicates that children who participate in school gardens and farm to school programs develop healthier lifestyles and life-long eating habits, improve academic performance, provide real-life learning about sustainability and ecoliteracy  while creating stronger community connections.

I don’t think we need studies to prove this. I think we all know that gardening is excellent exercise for body, mind and spirit and good, wholesome foods come from it. Our school gardens need support. If you’d like to help, or want more

information, visit the Kokua Foundation Hawaii website.

March 15 is the final day to sign up for the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program for the School Year 2013-2014, so tell your principals about it. All schools received an email a few weeks ago from the DOE Office of Child Nutrition and they have the application, but they have not had filled it out and sent it in. Continue Reading →

“Kilohana has been renovating and redecorating the living room of the manor house in anticipation of our new bar, Mahiko Lounge,” says Robin Velazquez of Gaylord’s at Kilohana. “We have put a great amount of effort into creating a new vibe for the room and we plan to share this new energy with our Gaylord’s guests as well.”

This SaturdayGaylord’s at Kilohana is hosting a costume party for flappers, gangsters, bootleggers, and socialites for a night of 1920s glamour and revelry. This party is to celebrate the grand opening of Mahiko Lounge and is a Kauai United Way fundraiser.

Cane Field Clothing & Gallery (upstairs at Kilohana) has roaring 20’s accessories in stock. But, you don’t need to come in costume. There’ll be accoutrements like feather boas and period hats available. Over $600 in prizes will be awarded.
