Durga Farms’ Banana Love Loaf

This week, I feature Durga Farms in my Farmers Markets column for Kauai Midweek. It was the first time Dan and I had been to their farm in Anahola and I was surprised to learn that they also offer yoga retreats and Ayurveda healing. The owner, Myra Lewin, wrote two books. Freedom in Your Relationship with Food: An Everyday Guide and Simple Ayurvedic Recipes, a companion cookbook. I have both books and will post reviews on them soon. If you’re a Tasting Kauai Facebook fan, you’ll recognize their pumpkins, which I posted pictures of several weeks ago. Three healthy and vital ladies run the property, and I quickly grew to respect their lifestyle and was charmed by their kind personalities. Vanessa Massey is the farm manager and Kelsey Brusnyk is Myra’s assistant. Kelsey recently sent me this note and a recipe to share. Enjoy! Continue Reading →

On Dec. 12, Kauai Beer Company will inaugurate Truck Stop Thursday. Beginning at 5 p.m., three food trucks will parked in front of the brewery at 4265 Rice Street. Trucks rotate each Thursday. This week, expect to see BE Food Truck Cafe(normally in Kojima’s parking lot), Little Greek Town (next to Otsuka’s) and Anatta’s Authentic Thai Food (Ace Hardware-Lihue). Order your food and wait inside the brewery and sip a pint. This is a terrific opportunity for the hundreds of people in the downtown area to have a place to go between work and home. Truck Stop Thursday is part of the brewery’s effort to be one of the landmark businesses committed to revitalizing downtown Lihue. The weekly event will feature some of the island’s favorite food trucks, in addition to Kauai Beer Company’s array of beers brewed on the premises. Tours of the brewery happen when there are people interested enough to spend time with one of their experienced brewers. For more information, call 808-245-1777, or visit Kauai Beer Company’s website and Facebook page. You can also read about them in Kauai Midweek’s “New Brewery Keeps It Fresh“.

NEWS:

Tasting Kauai

We hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving! Not much happened at the Lane household. While I slept, Dan got up at 4:30 a.m. to take pictures of the sunrise and then took shots of  the Kapaa Turkey Trot for Kauai Midweek‘s Paina Page. Over a bowl of oatmeal, we reminisced about the day we met (18 years ago today) and how much each of us has changed for the better, thanks to the other. Since we’ve been sick we spent the rest of the day on the couch with the dogs, wrapped in blankets, watching movies and holding hands. For “the big meal” I made pumpkin soup, with a pumpkin I got at Durga Farm last Wednesday, as well as salt and pepper biscuits. The soup recipe will be in next week’s Kauai Midweek but I’ll post the biscuit recipe, which I got from the November issue of bon appetit magazine. The pumpkin is enough for three or four meals, so I’ll post additional pictures and recipes on the Tasting Kauai Facebook page. Since it’s a gorgeous, flavorful and moist pumpkin that’s adapted to Kauai’s climate and pests, I saved the seeds to plant in my garden! Tonight we are having pumpkin and kale galette, which is a simple, rustic and wholesome free form tart. Maybe tomorrow we’ll have Thai pumpkin soup. Continue Reading →
