Happy Aloha Friday Kauai Tasters!

NEWS:

Mahalo Dan Lane
Thanks to Dan, I’m quite enamored with the new look of the site. I hope you enjoy the inviting look that the banners and logo offer. It makes my mouth water just looking up at his shot of the Plantation Gardens’ lilikoi cheesecake!

Foodista
I’ve got a lot of Tasting Kauai news to reveal, and a reminder. This Sunday we’ll be featured as the blog of the day on Foodista. “Your blog post for making Kalua pork is absolutely amazing,” Alisa Escanlar wrote in an email, “and it will be featured on the Foodista homepage for 24 hours.” We’re all about spreading the seeds of aloha, and we hope this inspires folks to visit our site, and by extension, our local businesses. Last Monday, Daniel Shipley wrote a post for us that recalled his experience with the exotic fruit of Kauai. Daniel is back home traveling the far reaches of Canada and blogging about it, but before that, he lived on Kauai for a year. While he was here, he worked in the kitchen at one of our favorite restaurants, Oasis on the Beach.

Daniel Shipley lives in British Columbia and writes about food and travel at Northern Rambler, a blog about discovery. Inspired by this young man’s passion for food, I asked him to write about his island experience for Tasting Kauai.

It was an easy decision for me to move to Kauai. My parents had recently moved and I hadn’t spent time with them for a couple of years so it was really a no brainer. As a foodie, what drew me to the island were the alien-like fruits and vegetables that at that point were a mystery to me. Continue Reading →

Koloa Rum Dinner

“It’s rainbows and mai tais!” My girlfriend Carol exclaimed during her visit to Kauai, even though it rained the whole time. Maybe it was the bottle of Dark Koloa Rum that brightened her spirits. Even her husband Bill, who is not a rum fan, was won over by the smooth, almost sweet chocolate-colored rum.

Dan and I tried Koloa Rum for the first time about two years ago. Because I like the rum so much, I did a story on the Koloa Rum Co. last August.

Full disclosure: Dan is taking rum shots. Pictures of Koloa Rum that is. In drinks and in bottles for the Hana Hou ad in June, and well as some refreshing recipes, and promotional materials. Click here to see his shots next to 12 recipes. One is the Gaylord’s Mai Tai. Continue Reading →
