Today’s Pau Hana Friday cocktail shot is from our last culinary tour. Besides the tasting, Stephanie Krieger of Nani Moon Mead gave us an exclusive tour of her meadery, and taught us how to make a Winter Sun Margarita. It was a refreshing ending to our day-long tour.

I always learn something on these tours. Guy Higa, executive chef of the Kauai Marriott Resort, does a cooking demonstration while he makes our four-course lunch. Last time, I learned that if you boil tofu for a minute, it takes the water out. I had no idea. I always pressed it between paper towels and hand cloths! This time, I learned that to make the best fried noodles, you must take them straight from the boiling water and into a hot pan with oil. Continue Reading →

The new Restore Kauai Farmers Market not only makes parking a lot easier, but the value added products are a welcome addition to the Wednesday farmers market. There is a nicely graded dirt pathway that leads to the hugely popular Kapaa Market across the street. Vendors such as Midnight Bear Breads, and Kauai Kunana Dairy line the entrance. “I have a garden cart in front of my permaculture estate at 6200 Helena Lane, Kapaa, in Kapahai,” says Jai Roberts. “We sell bananas, green beans, greens of all sorts, turmeric and avocados. Everything is grown using organic practices with aged compost. I am passionate about growing food and sharing it with my community.”

Jai created Honua Lani Gardens as a model of sustainable tropical living. The property is on five-acres of botanical grounds with ponds, tropical flowers, sustainable vegetable gardens and a fruit tree orchard. Five bungalows offer a Mini-Resort experience that includes a spa featuring Lomi-Lomi massage, and a Finish style sauna for cleansing Hawaiian salt scrubs. For more information visit the Honua Lani Gardens website, or Facebook page. “I am co creator of the Kauai Sustainability forums, and we have a page for that on Facebook.  Continue Reading →

A Culinary Romp Through Paradise

We are gathered for the inaugural Tasting Kauai Culinary Tour. A day-long culinary romp through paradise where we’ll be sampling Kauai’s best, from farm to fork. The day is packed with an authentic taste of Kauai and includes a tour of Ein Rogel Farm, lunch at the Kauai Marriott Resort, and cocktails with rum from the Koloa Rum Company, made by mixologist Dave Power.

Under a covered awning in the wet morning air, we gaze at a large display of freshly cut tropical fruit. “I always tell people to have a light breakfast because when you come on the tour, you’ll be eating a lot!” says Jesse Schwartz, the guide for Ein Rogel Farm.

The 26-acre sustainable exotic fruit farm is nestled in the Kahuna Valley. There are 80 varieties of tropical fruit on the estate and the five-million-year-old Makaleha Mountain range provides the trees with pristine spring water. Twenty-four of us listen to Jesse, our mouths watering in anticipation. Continue Reading →

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our inaugural culinary tour. Our deadline to register was June 12, which enabled everyone to gather the necessary ingredients for our guests. When the deadline came, we had one person. Over the next two days we got enough calls to do the tour, but it had already been cancelled.

We are not giving up easily! As my husband reminded me, Thomas Edison tried over 9,000 times before he invented the lightbulb. Our next tour is July 13, and will feature the same line up. For a refresher, check out our culinary tour page.

We are also working on a new north shore tour, and sumptuous details will be forthcoming. Continue Reading →
