Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. Sunday is Father’s Day and I miss my father who is more than 3,000 miles away in Colorado. One of the greatest gifts he gave me, besides my very life (!) is a love for the outdoors. As a young, single adult, I would join him on Weekend Warrior expeditions. He’d drive his Ford Ranger up I-70, I’d pop in a mix tape and we’d both sing, gloriously off-key, to the Doobie Brothers, Billy Joel or the Rolling Stones:

“I’ve been holding out so long
I’ve been sleeping all alone
Lord I miss you
I’ve been hanging on the phone
I’ve been sleeping all alone
I want to kiss you

Oooh oooh oooh oooh oooh oooh oooh”

Oh yea! It was that good. Once we got to the mountains, we’d lace up our hiking books and strap on our CamelBak or slip into cross-country skis and zip up our North Face jackets. Self propulsion, combined with clear skies and fresh air, nurtured easy companionship and cemented our relationship. Dad, who is now an 84-year-old stroke survivor, has gifted me with those memories, which I treasure often. I hope that my phone call this Sunday will be enough to express the gratitude and love I have for him. Here’s to dads everywhere! Mahalo for providing us with security, safety, love and memories that last a lifetime.

If you’re on Kauai, a great way to celebrate dad is with a pint and a cheer! In today’s The Garden Island newspaper, we report that Kauai Beer Company now serves food during Finally Friday. Chef Joe Fox makes flavorful, filling, beer friendly food, which is the perfect complement to cold pints that go down easy. This Sunday, in our On the Farm column, we showcase taro  from W.T. Haraguchi Farm. Continue Reading →

If you’ve been fans of Tasting Kauai for a while, you know we hold the Kauai Grill in high esteem. We’ve had the privilege of interviewing chef de cuisine Maxime Michaud and executive chef Leanne Kamekona, as well as tasting dishes from world-renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. It’s simply delightful to be pampered with excellent service in a posh setting, while overlooking Hanalei Bay during sunset. Here is the new Fall 2013 menu, which includes 15 new dishes. If you would like to learn more about Maxime, Leanne, the food or  Kauai Grill, read my articles, “A Taste of Summer at the Kauai Grill“, “Robust Dishes at Kauai Grill” and “A Sense of Place on the Plate“. My husband Dan and I went to the St. Regis Princeville to taste some of the new summer dishes on the menu at Kauai Grill. The luxury resort’s signature restaurant is inspired by internationally acclaimed chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. (He and his wife did a fantastic show called Kimchi Chronicles by the way). We had a chance to meet Kauai Grill’s chef de cuisine Maxime Michaud when we wrote about his new position for MidWeek Kauai. Today, I’m happy to share my incredibly delicious experience with you, as well as some tasty upcoming menus that Maxime and general manager Antonio Palomares shared with us.

We start with a bottle of Extra Dry Bele Casel prosecco, a sparkling wine from Italy where the grapes are soft-pressed and the wine is aged for three months. Our server keeps the bottle chilled and the mildly sweet bubbly pairs wonderfully with our entire dinner.

The sun starts to sink over the ocean as a bowl of Cherry Tomato Gazpacho ($12) is served. The chilled soup is garnished with thin moons of crisp cucumber, cherry tomato halves, little balls of pickled watermelon and lemongrass granita. Continue Reading →

The menus have changed at Makana Terrace, Nalu Kai and Kauai Grill, which are all located in the luxurious St. Regis Princeville. I’m excited to report that Nalu Kai is now offering their tapas menu, which is seasonal. You can learn more about Nalu Kai’s terrific tapas menu, which is enjoyed poolside, overlooking Hanalei Bay, in an article I wrote for MidWeek Kauai. I’ve also written about Makana Terrace and Kauai Grill before. Here are the recent menu changes and upcoming events for the St. Regis Princeville restaurants. If there’s no date, it’s because it’s still in the planning stages and, you know, I’ll share it when you when I get it!
