Last Sunday, the Garden Island Range & Food Festival showcased locally grown and made food. As the farm chair, I wrote about sourcing produce for the hyper-local event last week. About 350 visitors and residents showed up and ate food that 13 farmers, 5 ranchers and Kauai Shrimp donated, and 14 restaurants cooked. Kauai Coffee was there as well as The Right Slice and Lappert’s Hawaii. Salty Wahine Hawaiian Gourmet Sea Salts were uses in some of the dishes and they donated blends for the chef’s gift bags. Aunty Lilikoi also donated variety packs for the chef’s gift bags.

Students from the Culinary Arts program at the Kauai Community College received first hand education by top chefs by helping them prepare. Two students won $1,000 scholarships and got their picture taken with the mayor. We had a display table filled with local fruit, vegetables, orchids from Orchid Alley Kauai and meat from A`akukui Ranch that we auctioned off and procees are going to the Kauai Food Bank just in time for Christmas.

It was a Zero Waste event. All the participating chefs provided biodegradable plates, forks and cups, and kids from 4H made sure guests put their trash in the proper receptacles.

“All the recyclable waste is in a pile mixed with wood chips and fungal spores,” says Joseph Dunsmoor of Zero Waste Kauai. “I am doing an experiment on how well a fungal cold compost will break down the material, especially the forks and spoons. It will all break down to arthropod manure before next year and I will share the results.” Continue Reading →

The Rotary Club of Kapaa has just released the People’s Choice Winners for their Taste of Hawaii event held on June 2. Here’s what they have to say:

BEST SEAFOOD: Chef Leanne Kamekona of the Sheraton Kauai Resort  RumFire/Lavas on Poipu Beach won for her crab-crusted Hawaiian opah, sautéed tot soi, Chardonnay cream sauce and lomi lomi tomatoes.  A pure native Hawaiian, award-winning Executive Chef Kamekona has a passion for Hawaiian sustainability — utilizing traditional staples to create her twist within her Hawaiian-rooted cuisine.

BEST MEAT & POULTRY: For the second year in a row, the winner is Chef Randall Yates of Casa di Amici in Poipu for his Nero Risotto made with Casa di Amici Sausage and sautéed with Grana Padano Parmesan Cheese. At Casa di Amici since 1990, Chef Yates specializes in Mediterranean and many cross-cultural cuisines. He uses his classical training in conjunction with many locally produced products.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our inaugural culinary tour. Our deadline to register was June 12, which enabled everyone to gather the necessary ingredients for our guests. When the deadline came, we had one person. Over the next two days we got enough calls to do the tour, but it had already been cancelled.

We are not giving up easily! As my husband reminded me, Thomas Edison tried over 9,000 times before he invented the lightbulb. Our next tour is July 13, and will feature the same line up. For a refresher, check out our culinary tour page.

We are also working on a new north shore tour, and sumptuous details will be forthcoming. Continue Reading →

Aloha Kauai Tasters. I got a very sad call from a distressed vendor last Saturday. Through sobs, she said the Hanalei Farmers Market, run by the nonprofit Hale Halawai ‘O Hanalei, had been shutdown. All 56 vendors were told after the market closed for the day. It seems the market didn’t have proper parking permits.

Many livelihoods have been devastated by this closure, and few have options to replace the income made from that market. I am told that the market manager is working on obtaining the proper permits, and the market will eventually reopen. Continue Reading →
