Hale Puna Farm fresh Market

The Market

Our foodie staff at Tasting Kauai loves to check out new restaurants and stay up to date on new chef innovations & creations  here on island, and while there are few things that excite us more than the search for a heavenly meal, they do exist! I recently had the pleasure of visiting Hale Puna in the town of Waimea. Hale Puna, or the historic Gulick Rowell Mission House, is a burgeoning small scale food forest. This community focused farm is a project we can really get behind. Every Thursday afternoon from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Hale Puna, 9567 Huakai Road you can stop by and visit their farm market and purchase your produce for a good cause. (If this time doesn’t work for you, you can also reach out to set up pickup time for a CSA basket)

Community Involvement

Working closely with farm school interns from Ke Kula Niʻihau o Kekaha, they not only have a beautiful flourishing garden, but also strive to provide hands on training to get kids on the west side involved in organic permaculture style farming. They want to show them this is a viable outlet for future employment that can benefit them, their health and their community.

Hale Puna is a 501(c)3. All proceeds from the Farmers Market go towards restoring the historic Gulick Rowell Mission House and to paying these farm school interns (middle and high school students from the west side!).

Getting the next generation to care & get involved is going to shape what the future of food security will look like on our lovely island. Creating more food growth, protecting and honoring the culture, and helping to create economically resilient jobs are all imperative goals for Kauai. They are striving for all of the above with this foundation.  Jim Ballantine, a 4th generation West side resident, owns and operates the Kōkeʻe lodge along with Hale Puna. His daughter Fanny runs the market and farm project and is the driving force behind getting this project flourishing. 

The Food

Here at the farm the students have already planted over 75 fruit trees and many other crops including papaya, ulu(breadfuit), avocado, banana, liliko’i, ‘olena(turmeric), sweet potato, sugar cane and kabocha. The traditional forest garden will focus on presenting classes and workshops around food, sustainability, permaculture and the history of West Kauai agriculture. Any food that isn’t sold at the market on Tuesdays or in CSA baskets, is taken up to be utilized at Kōkeʻe Lodge, so no food goes to waste! 

History

Whether you are a foodie, a history buff, a cultural guru or just a curious visitor – there is something for everyone at Hale Puna. Inquire about a donation based guided tour of the oldest house in Hawaii and their surrounding food forest. This home was built in 1829 and has been majorly renovated only once in 1927. The original wood floors are still inside! They hope to use the house once it is restored as a community center for events and performances that contribute to the cultural richness of West Kauai life. It is so cool to see the home being brought into the modern world with this food focused non profit!

This week, I started posting holiday menus for many of Kauai’s restaurants that will include Kauai Grill, Makana Terrace, Ilima Terrace, Nanea, RumFire, Dondero’s, Merriman’s and Roy’s Poipu. If you have a chance, consider attending our Dec. 14 Kauai Culinary Tour (the details are listed under events). It will be the last of its kind as we are redesigning the day. Normally, we begin the day with a tour of the home garden of the Kauai Marriott Resort’s executive chef. Most people really enjoy this part because they get to speak with the chef in an intimate setting and ask questions, and the chef usually shares interesting tips. On a previous tour, as we walked the gardens, chef pulled a ti leaf from a nearby plant and showed everyone how to do the wrapping for laulau, a traditional Hawaiian dish of pork wrapped in taro leaves and again in ti leaves.

After that, we usually go to a 26-acre exotic fruit farm that sustainably grows more than 80 varieties of fruit. We sample what’s in season, and walk the farm. The tour guide is very knowledgeable and weaves Hawaiian history and lore into his stories about fruit. They also have a food forest, full of highly nutritious plants that thrive in Kauai’s environment.

We are excited to announce that Tasting Kauai was awarded a grant from the Hawaii Tourism Authority. This means we have to operate within certain guidelines, and have to redesign the first part of the tour. The Jan. 11 tour will still happen, but it will be different. Holiday Menus

Over the next several weeks, I will be posting the holiday menus for many of Kauai’s restaurants including Kauai Grill, Makana Terrace, Ilima Terrace, Nanea, RumFire, Dondero’s, and Roy’s Poipu. If you’ll be here for Christmas and won’t be making a holiday dinner, visit Tasting Kauai often. These restaurants are making delicious meals for Christmas, and the hardest part will be choosing where to go!

I’ll also be reviewing the Splash of Aloha cookbook. If you’ve ever wondered about Hawaii’s fish, their names, what they taste like, and how to cook it, this is the book. For the holidays, Watermark Publishing is offering a series of gift sets that include the cookbook, a custom dishrag and something extra, In the case of The Hawaiian Book of Rice, you’ll get a rice paddle and dishrag.

Healthy Hut

Healthy Hut is a natural foods grocery store in Kilauea that North Shore residents have been frequenting for years. The store was always cramped, but last week they just moved to a new location. It’s still in Kilauea, but is now just off the highway, makai side, on Hookui Road. We stopped in the other day and the store is a delight to walk into. Air-conditioning, spaciousness, shining hard wood floors, upbeat music and loads of Kauai Made products and local produce make it an exciting place to be. The Market at Common Ground in Kilauea has made some changes. Everything in The Market is eco-friendly and with that goes education. “Our goal is to share why we choose these amazing eco companies,” says market manager Stephanie Montanez. “We share what is different about each company’s products and what sets them apart from conventional products. Everything in our Market enhances life, preserves the Earth, supports local (97 percent of our vendors are local), and changes the paradigm of how people relate to shopping. Ultimately, we want to expand the awareness of why it is important to shop from this new perspective.”

2013 tours and workshops include chef Rodman teaching children in a school setting about eating healthy. “We are expanding our offering of knowledge by becoming a community hub and a resource for information, classes, workshops, tours,” says Montanez. “All to be centered around conscious eating, healthy lifestyles, agricultural knowledge, and Hawaiian herbal medicine.

Montanez owns the skin care company Palaau – The Healing Touch of Plants. Palaau has acquired land at Common Ground, as well as manufacturing space. “My goal with my land will be to create a endemic, indigenous (as well as other botanicals) native hawaiian herb garden that supplies botanicals for Palaau,” says Montanez.  “My dream is to preserve this lost art and the profound wisdom and ways of Laau lapaau (healing with Hawaiian medicinal herbs), the mana o, the seeds, and the experience of the intangible.” Continue Reading →

One of the best fine-dining deals you can find on Kauai, is the Food and Wine Tasting Menu at the Hukilau Lanai. The five-course dinner ($40 for food and wine, $28, food only) is available from 5 to 5:45 p.m., and can be ordered gluten-free. Recently the Tasting Menu changed to:

  • Island Gazpacho with koloa Rum Pineapple Basil Sorbet, St. Gabriel Riesling Auslese, Mosel, Germany
  • Candied Ahi with Coconut Chipotle Sauce, Gazela Vinho Verde, Portugal
  • Sausage and Warabi with char-grilled house-made longanisa and tomatoes, Torres “Las Mulas” Rose, Central Valley Chile
  • Fresh Catch served on quinoa with Kauai-grown kale salad and preserved lemon vinaigrette, Poggio Anima Sangiovese, Toscana, Italy
  • Choice of Artesian Cheese Duo or Big Island Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee, R.L. Buller & Son Muscat, Victoria, Australia
