Tasting Kauai is a big fan of the Hukilau Lanai. The food is delicious, and that’s the first requirement that needs to be satisfied. And by going on that criteria alone, you won’t be disappointed. Combine the food with lush landscaping, ocean views and open air dining, and you’ve got one enchanted evening.

We appreciate that owners Ron and Krissi Miller strive for sustainable business practices, and use local products whenever they can. I know this because they have an interactive online menu designed by Real Time Farms. Just hover over an ingredient, and you can see which farm it came from. Plus, I used to work at an organic farm, and I met Ron at the back door every Wednesday with a box full of just harvested produce. Continue Reading →

When we had to cancel our culinary tour last month, I was pretty depressed. We had an excellent foodie-fun-filled-day planned. But, thanks to my supportive husband, and the fantastic food growers and makers involved with the tour, we rescheduled it for July 13.

This time it’s on! We have met our minimum, and will be romping through Paradise on a culinary adventure come rain or shine. I’m so grateful that we gave it another try, because it’s a fantastic line up and it’s going to be a blast! We still have some spaces left, so visit our culinary tour page and reserve your spot. Executive chef Guy Higa is making allowances for those on alternative diets such as vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free. Continue Reading →

We had a chance to stop by the Hukilau Lanai for lunch, and I’m glad we did! We sat at the bar, next to the pool, with a view of the ocean, and enjoyed a ginormous meatball sub for $5.95. You can’t beat that price for well made food on Kauai! Imagine three tender meatballs nestled in chewy bread that is made in-house, and topped with a savory tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. The lunch special changes every day. Tomorrow, starting at 11:30 they’ll have Teriyaki Burgers for $5.95. Follow the Hukilau Lanai Facebook page to keep up with specials.

Kokua Festival 2012, Kauai

Last night’s benefit concert for the Kokua Foundation was an amazing experience. The Kokua Hawaii Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that supports environmental education in the schools and communities of Hawaii, and Tasting Kauai was happy to donate time to this inspiring cause.

After we packed everything up, I got a chance to see the last part of the show. Paula Fuga  has a beautiful voice, and I really like John Cruz. When the two of them sing with Jack Johnson, it’s like Hawaiian angels caressing our ears. Continue Reading →
