Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. In Food, Fiestas at Paco’s Tacos House, that runs in our “Tastes of Kauai” column in today’s The Garden Island newspaper, you can learn what the brothers Aguilar have in store for Kapaa Art Walk (tomorrow) and Cinco de Mayo.  They have opened a new restaurant in Kapaa, so you’ll find out what they serve as well.

This Sunday, our “On the Farm” column explores an heirloom variety of eggplant and includes an excellent pupu recipe. You can get these rare eggplant starts from Heaven on Earth Starts at the Saturday Namahana farmers market and the Start Cart in front of Hoku Natural Foods Market.

We’ve added another Kauai food tour. Since we’ve received excellent feedback from our guests about A Taste of Kilohana, along with attentive service, the knowledge of our guide and the locally-sourced, off-the-menu lunch, we thought we’d serve up another! Now we offer A Culinary Romp Through Paradise, which takes place on a Friday, and for our hard-working residents, A Taste of Kilohana, which takes place on  two Saturdays a month. We also have our Farmers Market Tour, which takes place every Wednesday. Continue Reading →

Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. Last Sunday, our article “Crunch time with carrots” ran in The Garden Island newspaper.  I hope you get a chance to try the recipe and if you can use Kauai Juice Company’s kiawe-aged balsamic vinegar, all the better.

We didn’t have a story in the Wednesday edition. TGI is going from two food writers to one and there was a miscommunication. Our last story will be in this Wednesday’s edition before our “Tastes of Kauai” column gets moved to Fridays TGIFriday pullout. We’ve cooked up some tasty stories and we appreciate you sticking with us! Continue Reading →

Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. Last Sunday, our article “How to grapple with star apple” ran in The Garden Island newspaper.  I had star apple a couple of years ago, but didn’t like the latex coating it left in my mouth. Come to find out, I ate a raw one. That’s one of the perks of my job:  learning about exotic produce from the people who grow them. Now I know how to grapple with a star apple! Continue Reading →

Kauai Healthy Lifestyle with Verde

When Maris Manzano, owner of Verde, read Round One: Battle of the Bulge in Kauai Midweek, she learned that Dan and I were on a mission to lose weight. Knowing that Verde is one of our favorite go-to stops for a quick bite to eat, Maris, who is into fitness, gave me a call and asked how she could help. Since Jane Riley, our personal trainer at Kauai Athletic Club, has me on 1300 calories a day, I suggested calorie counts. Maris created this Healthy Thursday meal, which is available starting today and under 380 calories!

Verde Chilaquiles  ($12.99) are made with local ingredients including NewMona Hui Farm eggs, Kauai Kunana Dairy feta cheese, Lawai Valley  Mushrooms and Govinda Farm‘s kale and tomatillos. Since Maris went through considerable effort to create a new, low calorie, locally sourced menu item, she’s keeping it on the menu for the entire month of March. If you’d like to see more of these types of meals at Verde, stop by and try it and let her know what you think.

Go to the Tasting Kauai Facebook page and leave a comment about how you stay healthy,  and you can  win a $20 gift certificate to Verde.  This offer will expire at midnight HST on Wednesday, March 12.

Verde made some changes including taking down the walls, opening up the space and adding a wide, granite-topped bar. There’s new tables and chairs, new AC, new lighting and fixtures as well as new bathroom fixtures.  Continue Reading →
