Chad Summers, marketing manager of Seeds of Change, visited the Regenerations Seed Garden in Kalihiwai this week. The group planted seeds that Seeds of Change donated to the Kauai Community Seed Bank.

Regenerations Botanical Garden is a nonprofit organization working to conserve plant diversity through community stewardship. Fulfilling the vision of a decentralized botanical garden that exists in our backyards, in our neighbor’s, and in farms and gardens across the island. The Regenerations Seed Garden and Kauai Community Seed Bank collects, regenerates, and distributes plants that are native, rare, threatened, nutrient-dense, high-yielding, medicinal, beautiful, delicious and otherwise important to us, our island, and the planet. When we had to cancel our culinary tour last month, I was pretty depressed. We had an excellent foodie-fun-filled-day planned. But, thanks to my supportive husband, and the fantastic food growers and makers involved with the tour, we rescheduled it for July 13.

This time it’s on! We have met our minimum, and will be romping through Paradise on a culinary adventure come rain or shine. I’m so grateful that we gave it another try, because it’s a fantastic line up and it’s going to be a blast! We still have some spaces left, so visit our culinary tour page and reserve your spot. Executive chef Guy Higa is making allowances for those on alternative diets such as vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free. Continue Reading →

We had a chance to stop by the Hukilau Lanai for lunch, and I’m glad we did! We sat at the bar, next to the pool, with a view of the ocean, and enjoyed a ginormous meatball sub for $5.95. You can’t beat that price for well made food on Kauai! Imagine three tender meatballs nestled in chewy bread that is made in-house, and topped with a savory tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. The lunch special changes every day. Tomorrow, starting at 11:30 they’ll have Teriyaki Burgers for $5.95. Follow the Hukilau Lanai Facebook page to keep up with specials.

Happy Aloha Friday everyone! I’m happy to say that all the farmers markets have recovered from the rain that pounded Kauai earlier this month. The markets aren’t as abundant as they usually are because most farmers watched their entire gardens wash away. It will be another three to four weeks before things are back to normal, but in the mean time, I hope you can support them by shopping at their markets before you hit the grocery store. You can read our article in this week’s MidWeek Kauai, where the farmers share how the storm affected their gardens.

I like to add links to articles we’ve done, or websites for the businesses that are listed. In some cases people only have a Facebook page, so I’ll link to that. That way, if you are interested in something, you can learn more about it. For some reason, every time I type the word “Kauai”, WordPress links it to our Farmers Market page. While we are trying to figure out why, don’t click on the link. (Post script: Dan fixed it!) Continue Reading →
