Last Sunday, we released the digital version of our book Tasting Kauai: Restaurants. There were some comments on our Facebook page that I’d like to address because there is a lot of anger and misinformation in today’s world, and I’d like our book to be a trusted source. One person was very upset that we attended a pop up dinner that had veal on the menu. Another person wanted to know if our book had GMO-Free listings.

At Tasting Kauai, we are very aware of how food gets to our table. That’s why we do what we do. We even have three pages on our website dedicated to conscious eating, food and farming definitions, and steps you can take. Our passion is to share our knowledge about the people and places that not only care about how food tastes but how it’s sourced. Everyday, we (at Tasting Kauai) make conscious choices so that the food we consume is wholesome for the people who grew it, the environment and ourselves. We have no desire to be perfect, rigid or militant about our choices. With that said, if you care about this sort of thing, using our guide will direct you to the places and people who cook good food from scratch with local ingredients whenever possible. If you don’t care about this sort of thing, then using our guide will direct you some great tasting food.

Kauai is a small island and 90 percent of our food is imported. That number makes us very vulnerable, and it’s impossible to do 100 percent local here. We don’t grow wheat, beans or grains, nor olive oil, onions, stone fruit or berries. Kauai is blessed with an abundance of small, family farms, most of who grow organic, some of who use a little commercial fertilizer.  Local beef is grass-fed on thousands of acres of pasture. Experimental test crops (aren’t they all really?) of GMO corn seed grows on the west side, Poipu and Lihue. The “food” doesn’t get consumed here, but the biotech companies, which infiltrate our state, contribute a lot of money to government agencies, politicians, community events and schools. Because they have the money to pay ten times the normal rent for land, they get to stay. The best way to avoid GMO food is to avoid processed food that comes in packaging. Continue Reading →

Orchid Alley is combining different genera of orchids into stunning Mother’s Day Orchid Baskets that are still available at Orchid Alley in downtown Kapaa. Remember, Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 12.

Coconut Cup Juice Bar

Coconut Cup is now selling two kinds of breakfast burritos: Black Forest ham and cheese or roasted red pepper, organic spinach and cheese. “They are made with organic eggs, wrapped in spinach tortillas, and served with Sal’s Salsa!” Says owner Christa Hall. “Please come try!” They are served from 8 a.m. to noon daily.

Kauai Voted Second Best Island in the U.S.

On March 26, MauiNow.com reported that based on reviews of “millions of travelers around the world,” TripAdvisor, one of the largest online travel websites, announced that three Hawaiian islands landed in the top 10 ranking. Maui was recognized as the No. 5 top US island, but was edged out by Kauai which ranked No. 2 on the list. The Big Island was rated No. 8. Continue Reading →

Hawaiian Health Ohana

If you’ve perused these webpages for awhile, you likely know that I am a huge fan of noni. As a freelance writer, I write. A lot. Awhile back, my right forearm was seriously complaining and I couldn’t type. I had deadlines, so I used my left hand! Lucky for me, I’m pretty ambidextrous. I may have even been left handed before school put me in the right hand box. Anyway, I posted a picture of me writing with my left hand on my personal Facebook page because I thought it was kind of funny. My friend Ryan Wooton of Kauai Kunana Dairy suggested I use Hawaiian Health Ohana’s noni lotion. They squeeze a lot of udders for their yummy goat cheese, and that’s what they use. Now, this is no lie. I spread some on and it took away the pain. Completely. And it hasn’t come back! When I did a story about owner Steve Frailey in MidWeek Kauai, I learned that noni is 75 percent as effective as morphine at removing pain and that noni heals the problem, with no side effects.

Now, you have a chance to learn about noni at Steve’s organic farm. Hawaiian Health Ohana now offers Farm and Wellness Tours at their Kaakaanui Plantation in Moloaa. The centerpiece of the tour is the whole, raw food Steve makes from the noni grown on the plantation. “Let Food Be Thy Medicine,” from Hippocrates certainly is appropriate in this case. Kaakaanui is USDA Certified Organic, and Steve will be showing you the “best farming practices” he and his family have developed over the last 30 years here on Kauai. You will get a behind the scenes look at one of the more interesting examples of food becoming medicine, as well as a taste of wellness on Kauai.

The Koloa Community Market is now closed. “A variety of circumstances pulled us in this direction,” writes market manager Pattie White in an email. “The timing, especially now that the summer tourism has declined, has considerably reduced foot-traffic. I believe the location and size proved to be a seasonal market, so who knows? Maybe next spring I’ll try again and have it remain open only through to end of August 2013.” Continue Reading →
