Buddha’s Hand Hawaiian Candy

This is what the Buddha's Hand candy looked like after 8 rounds. It looks jelly like around the edges, but was too bitter for my taste.

This is what the Buddha’s Hand candy looked like after 8 rounds. It looks jelly like around the edges, but was too bitter for my taste.

I decided to call the best person I know while researching my article, Buddha’s Hand, in today’s The Garden Island newspaper. Ken Love is a kind, gentle man who is well known in Hawaii and around the world as a tropical fruit expert. He maintains a website full of information about Hawaii’s fruit and was in a fascinating movie called Fruit Hunters. Continue Reading →

No More Romp and Taste

Over the past two years our food tours have enabled us to meet some amazing people from all over the world. We have watched our guests’ eyes light up as they taste just-picked pineapples, noting that they tasted nothing like the store-bought kind — which are picked before they’re ripe so they can be shipped long distances. On our tours, we have had guests of all ages and it was delightful to watch children stuff their mouths with bright red mountain apples as seniors were invigorated by the fresh tropical air and lush landscaping. Our guide Kai led them through the orchard and each person connected deeply with him, each other, the moment and the food. Continue Reading →

Taking the stage 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Living Foods Market and the Kauai Culinary Market at The Shops at Kukuiula is the pummelo—grapefruit’s larger, sweeter cousin. The succulent and fragrant, orb-shaped fruit is sharing star power with Living Foods chef Michael Simpson to present Thai Pummelo Salad. Admission is free and samples are on the house!

The fun, fruity show is produced by the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers (HTFG) in an effort to share info about pummelo and other not-so-well-known edibles that are available in Hawaii. HTFG members are growing a wide variety of ultra-exotic tropical fruits statewide and they say the fruits are under-utilized by the mainstream market. Ultra-exotics under cultivation here include Surinam cherry, calamonsie, jackfruit, ulu, tamarillos, chico, lychee, white sapote, bilimbi and others.

HTFG is working to build markets for these juicy rarities through a series of free public taste tests and culinary demonstrations at stores on four Hawaiian Islands throughout 2012. Continue Reading →

NEWS:

Common Ground

This Saturday Common Ground is hosting a wedding ceremony and reception for a couple from Brooklyn, NY.  Originally a party of 20, they are now only traveling with nine adults and two children because many family and friends were effected by the storm. Thankfully, no one was injured, but due to the storm, folks couldn’t make travel arrangements.

As an extension of the aloha spirit from Kauai, Common Ground is waiving all cancellation and change fees and is refunding a chunk of their money. On the night of the wedding, there will be a special, intimate dinner setting to make their party seem less empty. Cheers to everyone at Common Ground, way to share that aloha spirit!

Akamai Juice Co.

Last Friday, Hot Shots and Wellness Shots from Akamai Juice Co. became available at The Garden Cafe. Now, Noni shots have been added to the Wellness & Hot shot menu at The Garden Cafe. “It’s a really great combo,” says Cas Schwabe Lutton of Akamai Juice Co. “A wellness shot or hot shot, followed by the Noni. I think they have a special price if you buy two shots. It used to be hard to find raw, organic noni nectar on island. I think the goat cheese peeps and I are the two biggest.” If anyone has organic lilikoi for sale, email Cas at akamaikauai@gmail.com.

According to the website HealthySteps.com noni is: Continue Reading →

Noni, an Ancient Polynesian Miracle Fruit

Four stages of noni growth. Daniel Lane photo

Around 350 A.D., Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands set sail on voyaging canoes and settled in the Hawaiian Islands. Each canoe accommodated 12 to 15 people. Animals and plants were brought for the long voyage as well as a new agricultural beginning.

Medicinal plants included the noni tree, which bears about 50 flowers per bud, and grows into a creamy white fruit. At the time, all parts of the plant were used in homesteading and to cure ailments and disease.
