Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. Yesterday was our 15th wedding anniversary and we decided to just relax and go with the flow. Since we are so blessed by our work and get to eat out often, we spent a lazy morning at the beach with the dogs. Last Wednesday, I found a new farm stand at the Kapaa farmers market, which sells produce by donation! I bought one of their gorgeous, huge Napa cabbages and we had it last night along with some kalua pork, steamed white rice, Champagne and dessert from Cakes by Kristin. Dan always gets a couple of cupcakes and I had the roasted pineapple crostata. I just can’t resist shortcrust pastry filled with fresh fruit!

In today’s The Garden Island newspaper, we highlight a line of convenience foods produced by Maui-based Life Foods. Their vegan products are guilt-free because they are made with local, organic ingredients, no common allergens (soy, dairy or gluten) and they’re now available on Kauai. Tomorrow, Melissa “Mo” Gregory, Tasting Kauai’s director of sales, will share her take on Life Foods. As a mother of two children who feeds her family meat-and potato-meals, she wasn’t sure how her family would like vegan food. It’s her first blog post for us and we’re happy to share her “mom” perspective.

Pumpkins are lining the tables at the farmers market right now. This Sunday, we showcase the Amira pumpkin from Olana Organic Farm and include a  quinoa pumpkin pilaf recipe. Continue Reading →

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. Today, get an update on our weight loss progress while learning about healthy dining options on Kauai in our “Working out and eating healthy” article that runs in our “Tastes of Kauai” column in The Garden Island newspaper.  Happy Mother’s Day! If my mom were here, I would certainly raise my glass.

This Sunday, our “On the Farm” column in The Garden Island newspaper covers One Song Farm, kai choy and Lisa’s recipe for Kai Choy Kim Chi. While researching for the article, I learned that kai choy has an amazing amount of nutritional benefits, so check it out!

Kauai Beer Company

Within the next few weeks, Kauai Beer Company will launch Finally Friday. The brewery will be introducing signature cocktails and featuring a limited entree menu. This is the first step in transitioning from a  tasting room to a full service microbrewery and restaurant.

Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. We are still in Colorado visiting family. It’s pretty amazing to see my father and his three brothers come together. One uncle flew from Texas to California to pick up his 90-year-old brother and drive him to Colorado. My favorite aunt and her husband drove from Idaho as well. We have had a wonderful time reconnecting and sharing memories, all of wich seem to happen over a well made meal.

There’s no local avocados in Colorado, but in last Sunday’s, article “Avocado Advantage” I reported on four of Hawaii’s most popular avocados. The recipe for Avocado Banana Bread makes a moist, dense nutritious loaf. On Kauai, at the farmers market, you can get very large avocados for a dollar or two.

In Fresh and Local on Kauai’s Westside, I reported on MCS Grill, a new restaurant that serves local favorites as well as healthy options. I’m happy to have found them because Dan can hardly resist a big, juice burger, especially when it’s made with local, grass-fed beef and I appreciate being able to order lighter meals such as the Vegetarian Trio. We are also happy to have another dining option when we are on the Westside. Continue Reading →

NEWS:

Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. Last Sunday, our article “Crunch time with carrots” ran in The Garden Island newspaper.  I hope you get a chance to try the recipe and if you can use Kauai Juice Company’s kiawe-aged balsamic vinegar, all the better.

We didn’t have a story in the Wednesday edition. TGI is going from two food writers to one and there was a miscommunication. Our last story will be in this Wednesday’s edition before our “Tastes of Kauai” column gets moved to Fridays TGIFriday pullout. We’ve cooked up some tasty stories and we appreciate you sticking with us! Continue Reading →
