NEWS:

Rise Awareness and Inspire Change

Over 1,000 people filled the Kauai War Memorial Hall in peaceful solidarity last night. Dr. Vandana Shiva, a celebrated physicist and environmental activist, spoke about the deadly effect genetically modified crops have had on India. She encouraged our residents to become active with legislature and banning GMO crops in Hawaii.

Andrew Kimbrall, executive director of the Center of Food Safety, gave numerous examples of how GMO giants Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow AgroSciences, Bayer CropScience and DuPont have been stanched. In 2006, the Center for Food Safety, Friends of the Earth, Pesticide Action Network North America, and KAHEA (the Hawaiian-Environmental Alliance) sued the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). A federal district judge ruled that the USDA violated the Endangered Species Act. The ruling is the first on controversial drug-producing GE crops.

Hawaii’s revered environmental activist Walter Ritte lives on Molokai and shared that 30 percent of the island’s food supply is grown on the island. A remarkable feat since 90 percent of the state’s food supply is imported. Many native Hawaiians were in the audience and he reached out to them by saying that independence and sovereignty are part of food security and aloha aina.

Regeneration Botanical Gardens and Kauai Seed Bank passed out seeds that were harvested from plants that were grown on Kauai. The event was organized by GMO Free Kauai, and Hawaii SEED. A free copy of the book Facing Hawaii’s Future was given to everyone.

Dan and I were there to cover the event for MidWeek Kauai. A complete story will run in the Farmers Markets column of the Jan. 30 issue. Continue Reading →

Tasting Kauai hopes you had a tasty holiday season and a joyful New Year! We have some fun foodie events to share for January, including our redesigned East Side culinary tour. We are happy to announce that we have been awarded a grant from the Hawaii Tourism Authority and we will use the funds to make our unique culinary tours even better!

A North Shore tour is still being designed, but here’s what we have locked down so far. We will begin with an authentic look at Hawaiian culture and  tour Waipa, an ahupuaa that uses ancient agriculture systems such as a restored fishpond and loi (taro patches). The farm cultivates two market gardens and our tour ends with an introduction to Hawaii’s Staff of Life: taro. With a million dollar view of Hanalei Bay, we will have an exclusive lunch at Makana Terrace, inside the luxurious St Regis Resort. Hawaii-born Leanne Kamekona, executive chef for the Princeville Resort, will be there to meet our guests and share her abundant aloha. We are still working on the details, including the last leg of our tour, so stay tuned foodies! Continue Reading →

Holiday Menus

Over the next several weeks, I will be posting the holiday menus for many of Kauai’s restaurants including Kauai Grill, Makana Terrace, Ilima Terrace, Nanea, RumFire, Dondero’s, and Roy’s Poipu. If you’ll be here for Christmas and won’t be making a holiday dinner, visit Tasting Kauai often. These restaurants are making delicious meals for Christmas, and the hardest part will be choosing where to go!

I’ll also be reviewing the Splash of Aloha cookbook. If you’ve ever wondered about Hawaii’s fish, their names, what they taste like, and how to cook it, this is the book. For the holidays, Watermark Publishing is offering a series of gift sets that include the cookbook, a custom dishrag and something extra, In the case of The Hawaiian Book of Rice, you’ll get a rice paddle and dishrag.

Healthy Hut

Healthy Hut is a natural foods grocery store in Kilauea that North Shore residents have been frequenting for years. The store was always cramped, but last week they just moved to a new location. It’s still in Kilauea, but is now just off the highway, makai side, on Hookui Road. We stopped in the other day and the store is a delight to walk into. Air-conditioning, spaciousness, shining hard wood floors, upbeat music and loads of Kauai Made products and local produce make it an exciting place to be. I expect the store will become very popular very soon. Look for the upcoming story in MidWeek KauaiContinue Reading →
