In “Original Santa Maria Style BBQ on Kauai,” in The Garden Island, catch up with the owners of Recessions Original Santa Maria Style BBQ, featuring a name that “is a nod toward the economic downturn and the family keeps prices low so people can enjoy filling meals” and refers to a style of BBQ Forbes magazine says is the “fifth style of American BBQ.”

Last week, in her On the Farm column, “Money for Moloaa,” Marta met with Moloaa farmers as they meet up with local politicians to generate funding for new irrigation systems.

This week, It’s lilikoi season! In this Sunday’s edition, learn about the purple passion fruit grown at Yoshii Farm and how to make Jean Marie Josselin’s Lilikoi Mint Chiffon Pie.

Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. We got back from Colorado late in the afternoon on Monday and hit the ground running Tuesday morning. We interviewed a cacao farmer at 10 a.m. and you can look for their story in our On The Farm column in this Sunday’s paper. Our Tastes of Kauai column, which runs in today’s TGIFriday edition, will share a unique look into a longtime favorite, Kilauea Bakery & Pau Hana Pizza. Continue Reading →

Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. We are still in Colorado visiting family. It’s pretty amazing to see my father and his three brothers come together. One uncle flew from Texas to California to pick up his 90-year-old brother and drive him to Colorado. My favorite aunt and her husband drove from Idaho as well. We have had a wonderful time reconnecting and sharing memories, all of wich seem to happen over a well made meal.

There’s no local avocados in Colorado, but in last Sunday’s, article “Avocado Advantage” I reported on four of Hawaii’s most popular avocados. The recipe for Avocado Banana Bread makes a moist, dense nutritious loaf. On Kauai, at the farmers market, you can get very large avocados for a dollar or two.

In Fresh and Local on Kauai’s Westside, I reported on MCS Grill, a new restaurant that serves local favorites as well as healthy options. I’m happy to have found them because Dan can hardly resist a big, juice burger, especially when it’s made with local, grass-fed beef and I appreciate being able to order lighter meals such as the Vegetarian Trio. We are also happy to have another dining option when we are on the Westside. Continue Reading →

Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. Last Sunday, our article “Crunch time with carrots” ran in The Garden Island newspaper.  I hope you get a chance to try the recipe and if you can use Kauai Juice Company’s kiawe-aged balsamic vinegar, all the better.

We didn’t have a story in the Wednesday edition. TGI is going from two food writers to one and there was a miscommunication. Our last story will be in this Wednesday’s edition before our “Tastes of Kauai” column gets moved to Fridays TGIFriday pullout. We’ve cooked up some tasty stories and we appreciate you sticking with us! Continue Reading →
