Baby it’s hot outside, but we like to put the freeze on summertime heat with frozen desserts made by Powerhouse Creamery today in “Powerhouse Creamery puts a chill on hot, steamy days” in The Garden Island.

In last week’s On the Farm column, we gingerly visited Kolo Kai Organic Farm in Moloaa, which specializes in growing turmeric and varieties of ginger.

In this week’s On the Farm, we visit Lawai Valley Mushrooms  and learn about kuditdit mushrooms.

Tasting Kauai Guidebook

The updated version of our restaurant guidebook will be available in late September, early October. The manuscript is in the hands of our editor and Dan has been busy designing a new look. He’s color coding each zone and including scenic and chef pictures. Besides 20 new restaurants, there are quite a few additions to the guidebook. Based on reader’s requests, we have expanded each listing and we have also included tips and added a “Central” zone as well. I’m really excited about this edition and I think you’ll be quite happy with it. We’ll let you know more as we get closer.

Travel the World

Mahalo to Katherine Belarmino of Travel the World for writing about her experience on our A Taste of Kilohana food tour. She got to try food she’d never had before and took some great pictures! Check out her story at “Tasting Kauai’s Tropical Fruits and Island Cuisine on a Hawaiian Food Tour.”

“The Tasting Kauai Taste of Kilohana food tour was a great opportunity to visit a famous Kauai landmark, taste some unusual tropical fruits, many of which I can’t find in my local grocery store, learn what a good mai tai tastes like, eat a fantastic island meal, and meet some fun fellow travelers.  Everyone left full and had a great time,” writes Katherine.

NEWS:

Tasting Kauai

While I was learning how to safely can food at the 64-hour Hawaii Master Food Preservers class, my Farmers Markets and Tastes of Kauai columns were moved to The Garden Island newspaper. Farmers Markets, now called On The Farm, runs in the Sunday edition and Tastes of Kauai runs in the Wednesday edition. Last Wednesday, our article about Red Salt called Feast for the Senses ran, and Sunday, you can learn about the Hawaii Master Food Preservers course. Continue Reading →

How We Choose Restaurants

Readers wonder how we choose restaurants, so I thought I’d share our process with you. I’d also like to take this opportunity to clear up a huge misconception. Many residents tell me that “Kauai doesn’t have good food” or some form of that. One gentleman even told me that Kauai was a culinary wasteland. I completely disagree and I hope I prove that by the end of this post. But first, a little background. Continue Reading →

A Culinary Romp Through Paradise

We are gathered for the inaugural Tasting Kauai Culinary Tour. A day-long culinary romp through paradise where we’ll be sampling Kauai’s best, from farm to fork. The day is packed with an authentic taste of Kauai and includes a tour of Ein Rogel Farm, lunch at the Kauai Marriott Resort, and cocktails with rum from the Koloa Rum Company, made by mixologist Dave Power.

Under a covered awning in the wet morning air, we gaze at a large display of freshly cut tropical fruit. “I always tell people to have a light breakfast because when you come on the tour, you’ll be eating a lot!” says Jesse Schwartz, the guide for Ein Rogel Farm.

The 26-acre sustainable exotic fruit farm is nestled in the Kahuna Valley. There are 80 varieties of tropical fruit on the estate and the five-million-year-old Makaleha Mountain range provides the trees with pristine spring water. Twenty-four of us listen to Jesse, our mouths watering in anticipation. Continue Reading →

The Hawaii Book of Rice, Part 2 – Musubi in Hawaii

Musubi in Hawaii

Last week, I wrote a cookbook review for The Hawaii Book of Rice. Today’s post is related, because I’m including a recipe from the book called Creamy Korean-Style Musubi. The cheap and savory snack can be found under warm lamps in grocery stores and gas stations island-wide.

It took me three years to try musubi because it has SPAM in it. After reading Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser, and The Meat You Eat by Ken Midkiff and Wendell Berry, I was put off from factory farmed meat. And I am fully aware that SPAM is loaded with cheap, factory farmed meat. So, I didn’t eat it. Continue Reading →
