On October 26, The Garden Cafe in Kilauea will start selling Akamai Juice Company Wellness Shots and Hot Shots. When Dan and I covered Akamai Juice, and owner Cas Schwabe Lutton, for the January 18, 2012 issue of MidWeek Kauai, we got to try these shots.

The Hot Shot is hot! It’s a fiery blend made with local, organic Hawaiian chili peppers. We call them nioi or nioi pepa here, but they are in the bird pepper family. There is also local, organic ginger; local, organic turmeric; organic garlic, and local, organic lime. Continue Reading →

Our friends at Kauai Kunana Dairy shared this good news with us.

“Finally, after three administrations and years of pleading, we are going to be able sell our value added farm products at the Kauai Sunshine Markets!  Look for our stand at the Kapaa Wednesday Sunshine Market and, hopefully, at the Koloa Monday Market.  Under the new market rules, qualified, bona fide value-added food products that contain 50% Kauai grown farm ingredients will be available for sale at all County Sunshine Markets.  All vendors are being required to reapply for market permits and have their applications reviewed to affirm that they are really farmers and not re-selling produce from Costco or another middle man. (Yes, sadly, this is all too common!)  A huge shout out to Derek Kawakami who introduced the legislation while he was on the County Council and to Councilmember JoAnn Yukimura for her support and work in initiating the first Sunshine Market in 1978!

Another happy note is that our fellow farmers, Ned and Marta Whitlock received approval for their Special Use Permit from the Kauai Planning Commission to begin construction on their farmworker housing once the other county agencies have reviewed their building plans!

We presently have an overabundance of Certified Organic arugula, chard, and vine-ripened cherry tomatoes in our garden. Louisa also has a very limited edition of her select mold-ripened aged cheeses.

Ryan is making a killer mango lemonade juice drink lightly sweetened with agave.

That’s it for now, back to the garden!

SAY NO TO GMO!”

During the month of October, all food and beverage proceeds from RumFire’s sunset view Table #53 will be donated to benefit the Kauai United Way.

RumFire combines 180-degree oceanfront views and Hawaiian-rooted cuisine with global influences, spearheaded by Executive Chef Roger Liang and his culinary team. Facing the beautifully landscaped Ocean Courtyard and smoldering firepits, Table #53 is prime seating for viewing Kauai’s lovely sunsets.

“We warmly welcome this opportunity to serve our community and invite our RumFire guests to support this worthy Kauai charity,” says Sheraton Kauai General Manager Chip Bahouth. “Through the participation of our diners, our goal is to raise $3,000.” Continue Reading →

The Koloa Community Market is now closed. “A variety of circumstances pulled us in this direction,” writes market manager Pattie White in an email. “The timing, especially now that the summer tourism has declined, has considerably reduced foot-traffic. I believe the location and size proved to be a seasonal market, so who knows? Maybe next spring I’ll try again and have it remain open only through to end of August 2013.” Continue Reading →

Today’s Pau Hana Friday cocktail shot is from our last culinary tour. Besides the tasting, Stephanie Krieger of Nani Moon Mead gave us an exclusive tour of her meadery, and taught us how to make a Winter Sun Margarita. It was a refreshing ending to our day-long tour.

I always learn something on these tours. Guy Higa, executive chef of the Kauai Marriott Resort, does a cooking demonstration while he makes our four-course lunch. Last time, I learned that if you boil tofu for a minute, it takes the water out. I had no idea. I always pressed it between paper towels and hand cloths! This time, I learned that to make the best fried noodles, you must take them straight from the boiling water and into a hot pan with oil. Continue Reading →
