If things look a little different to you, it’s because our website is getting an update. Besides a slightly different look, we are adding a payment option so tours can be booked online. Marta is writing a series of e-books which will be compiled into one book called A Culinary Romp Through Paradise: The Foodie’s Guidebook to Kauai. The book will have detailed listings of farmers markets, farmers, seasonality and descriptions of exotic produce, restaurants and food trucks, products made on Kauai with ingredients grown on Kauai, food related events, grocery stores that carry local products and more.

A series of e-books will be released as they are completed, which will be chapters in the final book. Since we are frequently asked, by locals and visitors alike, “Where are the best paces to eat?” we have compiled a list of our Top 20 Restaurants. We also support the Kauai artisans who hand-craft their products with passion, honesty and quality ingredients. Our Top 20 Artisans list features our favorite farm-fresh goodies.

Details can be read under the “Books” tab, which will be completed early next week. For now, you can check out what’s coming. Later, you’ll be able to download our Top 20. Part One: Restaurants, the first in our e-book series, is due to be released in November 2012. We have a lot of tasty information to share, and want to serve it like a multiple course dinner. Each e-book can be consumed and digested at you’re leisure, and just when you’re hungry for more, the next e-book should be fresh out of the oven! Continue Reading →

Today’s Pau Hana Friday cocktail shot is from our last culinary tour. Besides the tasting, Stephanie Krieger of Nani Moon Mead gave us an exclusive tour of her meadery, and taught us how to make a Winter Sun Margarita. It was a refreshing ending to our day-long tour.

I always learn something on these tours. Guy Higa, executive chef of the Kauai Marriott Resort, does a cooking demonstration while he makes our four-course lunch. Last time, I learned that if you boil tofu for a minute, it takes the water out. I had no idea. I always pressed it between paper towels and hand cloths! This time, I learned that to make the best fried noodles, you must take them straight from the boiling water and into a hot pan with oil. Continue Reading →

Midnight Bear Breads is now at the Restore Kauai farmers market on Wednesdays. The market is across the street from the Kapaa farmers market, so you can get your veg and bread all at once.

Last week, as I reached their stall, Evan McAfee asked me if I wanted to sample his baba ghanoush. Evan makes fresh spreads and sandwiches to eat with his girlfriend’s bread. Ursa Swift is the baker behind Midnight Bear Breads, and specializes in European-style baguettes and ciabatta.

“I make my own tahini,” Evan tells me as a slather a spoonful on a wedge of Ursa’s whole wheat bread. “I toast the sesame seeds first, and blend it in my Vitamix.” He adds roasted eggplant and fresh herbs. The result is a tahini forward creamy spread with a touch of acid. Continue Reading →

The new Restore Kauai Farmers Market not only makes parking a lot easier, but the value added products are a welcome addition to the Wednesday farmers market. There is a nicely graded dirt pathway that leads to the hugely popular Kapaa Market across the street. Vendors such as Midnight Bear Breads, and Kauai Kunana Dairy line the entrance.
