Ron Magrin, owner of the Koloa Deli, will be hand making meatballs with Kauai beef for his delicious Meatball Subs ($9.25). The meatballs will be folded into a 9-inch house made roll and topped with house-made marinara, provolone cheese and Parmesan cheese. You can get them this Monday, April 15. They’ll be available for as long as they last! Here’s my MidWeek Kauai story about Koloa Deli.

The Eastside is under new ownership and was closed for just over a week for remodeling. They are open now, and the menu is the same. The owners don’t have plans to make major changes.

Papalani Gelato has opened a new Anchor Cove location that features a full coffee bar. Each day a unique coffee grown, harvested, and roasted within the state of Hawaii is featured. The coffee is available by the cup or to purchase by the bag and there is a full range of espresso drinks, freshly brewed coffees, tropical teas, and frozen blended drinks. Freshly baked muffins, scones, cookies, and gluten-free coffee cakes from Passion Bakery in Kapaa are also available. Passion Bakery owner Michael Sterioff uses all natural and organic ingredients as well as local fruit. Papalani Gelato will also serve two types of oatmeal for a healthier breakfast option. Four stages of noni growth. Daniel Lane photo

Hawaiian Health Ohana

If you’ve perused these webpages for awhile, you likely know that I am a huge fan of noni. As a freelance writer, I write. A lot. Awhile back, my right forearm was seriously complaining and I couldn’t type. I had deadlines, so I used my left hand! Lucky for me, I’m pretty ambidextrous. I may have even been left handed before school put me in the right hand box. Anyway, I posted a picture of me writing with my left hand on my personal Facebook page because I thought it was kind of funny. My friend Ryan Wooton of Kauai Kunana Dairy suggested I use Hawaiian Health Ohana’s noni lotion. They squeeze a lot of udders for their yummy goat cheese, and that’s what they use. Now, this is no lie. I spread some on and it took away the pain. Completely. And it hasn’t come back! When I did a story about owner Steve Frailey in MidWeek Kauai, I learned that noni is 75 percent as effective as morphine at removing pain and that noni heals the problem, with no side effects.

Now, you have a chance to learn about noni at Steve’s organic farm. Hawaiian Health Ohana now offers Farm and Wellness Tours at their Kaakaanui Plantation in Moloaa. The centerpiece of the tour is the whole, raw food Steve makes from the noni grown on the plantation. “Let Food Be Thy Medicine,” from Hippocrates certainly is appropriate in this case. Kaakaanui is USDA Certified Organic, and Steve will be showing you the “best farming practices” he and his family have developed over the last 30 years here on Kauai. You will get a behind the scenes look at one of the more interesting examples of food becoming medicine, as well as a taste of wellness on Kauai.

The tours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10 a.m. and advance reservation are required. The normal cost is $40, but for the rest of March it’s $20 per person. Call 888-882-6664.  Continue Reading →

Pau Hana Friday for Jan. 18

NEWS:

Rise Awareness and Inspire Change

Over 1,000 people filled the Kauai War Memorial Hall in peaceful solidarity last night. Dr. Vandana Shiva, a celebrated physicist and environmental activist, spoke about the deadly effect genetically modified crops have had on India. She encouraged our residents to become active with legislature and banning GMO crops in Hawaii.

Andrew Kimbrall, executive director of the Center of Food Safety, gave numerous examples of how GMO giants Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow AgroSciences, Bayer CropScience and DuPont have been stanched. In 2006, the Center for Food Safety, Friends of the Earth, Pesticide Action Network North America, and KAHEA (the Hawaiian-Environmental Alliance) sued the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). A federal district judge ruled that the USDA violated the Endangered Species Act. The ruling is the first on controversial drug-producing GE crops.

Hawaii’s revered environmental activist Walter Ritte lives on Molokai and shared that 30 percent of the island’s food supply is grown on the island. A remarkable feat since 90 percent of the state’s food supply is imported. Many native Hawaiians were in the audience and he reached out to them by saying that independence and sovereignty are part of food security and aloha aina.

Regeneration Botanical Gardens and Kauai Seed Bank passed out seeds that were harvested from plants that were grown on Kauai. The event was organized by GMO Free Kauai, and Hawaii SEED. A free copy of the book Facing Hawaii’s Future was given to everyone.

Dan and I were there to cover the event for MidWeek Kauai. A complete story will run in the Farmers Markets column of the Jan. 30 issue. Continue Reading →

Tasting Kauai hopes you had a tasty holiday season and a joyful New Year! We have some fun foodie events to share for January, including our redesigned East Side culinary tour. We are happy to announce that we have been awarded a grant from the Hawaii Tourism Authority and we will use the funds to make our unique culinary tours even better!

A North Shore tour is still being designed, but here’s what we have locked down so far. We will begin with an authentic look at Hawaiian culture and  tour Waipa, an ahupuaa that uses ancient agriculture systems such as a restored fishpond and loi (taro patches). The farm cultivates two market gardens and our tour ends with an introduction to Hawaii’s Staff of Life: taro. With a million dollar view of Hanalei Bay, we will have an exclusive lunch at Makana Terrace, inside the luxurious St Regis Resort. Hawaii-born Leanne Kamekona, executive chef for the Princeville Resort, will be there to meet our guests and share her abundant aloha. We are still working on the details, including the last leg of our tour, so stay tuned foodies! Continue Reading →

Pau Hana Friday for Dec. 7

This week, I started posting holiday menus for many of Kauai’s restaurants that will include Kauai Grill, Makana Terrace, Ilima Terrace, Nanea, RumFire, Dondero’s, Merriman’s and Roy’s Poipu. An easy way to see them all at a glance (instead of paging through all the blog posts), is to select “Christmas Menu” in Categories on the right hand side bar. Or, click here.

If you have a chance, consider attending our Dec. 14 Kauai Culinary Tour (the details are listed under events). It will be the last of its kind as we are redesigning the day. Normally, we begin the day with a tour of the home garden of the Kauai Marriott Resort’s executive chef. Most people really enjoy this part because they get to speak with the chef in an intimate setting and ask questions, and the chef usually shares interesting tips. On a previous tour, as we walked the gardens, chef pulled a ti leaf from a nearby plant and showed everyone how to do the wrapping for laulau, a traditional Hawaiian dish of pork wrapped in taro leaves and again in ti leaves.

After that, we usually go to a 26-acre exotic fruit farm that sustainably grows more than 80 varieties of fruit. We sample what’s in season, and walk the farm. The tour guide is very knowledgeable and weaves Hawaiian history and lore into his stories about fruit. They also have a food forest, full of highly nutritious plants that thrive in Kauai’s environment.

We are excited to announce that Tasting Kauai was awarded a grant from the Hawaii Tourism Authority. This means we have to operate within certain guidelines, and have to redesign the first part of the tour. The Jan. 11 tour will still happen, but it will be different. I’m still negotiating with a local farm, and details will be forthcoming. Continue Reading →
