The 18th Hawaii Coffee Association (HCA) Conference and 5th Cupping Competition is July 18-20 at the Kauai Beach Resort. Offering a full lineup of informative activities, the annual event attracts statewide coffee industry growers, processors, roasters, wholesalers and retailers.

The gathering is also open to the public and the 2013-2014 season marks the 200th anniversary of coffee cultivation in Hawaii.

The conference includes workshops covering green grading, label compliance, quality control of roasting and packaging, cupping and eradication of the coffee berry borer beetle. Also on tap are legislative updates and reports from UH’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), the Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center (PBARC) and the Synergistic Hawaii Agriculture Council (SHAC).

Other activities include an expo, silent auction, election of HCA officers, tour of Kauai Coffee Company and networking reception at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Winners of the cupping competition are announced Saturday at a dinner headlined by TV business reporter Howard Dicus.

Roy’s Coffee, A Royal Kona Sellout

I’m a big fan of Roy Yamaguchi. He makes gorgeous food that tastes delicious, and he’s a nice guy. I had the honor of meeting him, and we talked about the challenges of sourcing from local farms and feeding a lot of hungry people. But this morning, as I drink a disappointing cup of Roy’s coffee, I wonder what’s gone wrong.

You may already know that Yamaguchi is an icon in Hawaii. In the 80s, he and 11 other chefs created Hawaii Regional Cuisine (HRC). Before HRC, mom and pop restaurants served the “peasant” food of Hawaii, which is based on plantation-style food. Thousands of people immigrated to Hawaii from places like China, Japan, Portugal, Korea, and the Philippines to work on plantations, and the best of their cultural dishes are enjoyed in restaurants today. I just received an announcement naming the winners of the Hawaii Coffee Competition. Congratulations to every island, and to the farmers who hand-craft their coffee. Big coffee companies add 10 percent Kona coffee beans to 90 percent inferior beans sourced from outside the United States. As the Hawaii government bumbles through the Truth in Labeling bill, the only insurance you have when buying authentic Hawaiian coffee is knowledge. So feel free, indulge in these award winners!
