After a great deal of extremely fun research, I happy to announce the launch of two new food tours. I’ve partnered with amazing people who have a passion for great food and whose cups overflow with aloha. These new Kauai food tours introduce guests to our favorite places and people who make fresh food from scratch, using local ingredients whenever possible. Kauai Coffee Agricultural Business Plan Competition
The winners of the Kauai Coffee Agricultural Business Plan Competition were announced last night. Congratulations to the lucky recipients, we look forward to your business expanding, and tasting your delicious food!
First Place and $20,000 went to Salty Wahini. Melissa McFerrin of the Kauai County Farm Bureau was there last night and says, “Right now they are 82.9 percent local. They can’t get things like garlic and pepper because it doesn’t grow here, but they are going to use the money to expand their operations.”

NEWS:
Roy’s Poipu
Matthew Dela Cruz, executive chef of Roy’s Poipu Bar & Grill, is resigning. The chef makes Kauai proud, having graduated from the Culinary Program at Kauai Comminity College. He began at Roy’s 12-years ago, and has been the executive chef for the last five. We wish you the best Matt, where ever you go, and whatever you do! For more on Matt or Roy’s Poipu, check out my MidWeek Kauai article.

I was so impressed, I called the article, “Where Farmers Are Rock Stars.” Peter is a mighty force that encourages the livelihood of his sources, nurturing their success and the local economy.
My education was further enhanced when Dan and I videotaped the restaurant’s executive chef Mark Arriola for the Kauai County Farm Bureau’s Kauai Grown campaign. The website is up now, and next Monday’s post will showcase Kauai Grown. If you’d like to learn more about Merriman’s, and watch Mark prepare a signature salad that’s on the menu, click here to watch the video. Continue Reading →
