Tasting Kauai

In today’s The Garden Island newspaper, our article “Bon appetit at Red Clay” reports on some tasty surprises at the final concert for this year’s Red Clay Jazz Festival, including the appearance of Jean Marie Josselin, and information on his new restaurant. If you’ve seen heart-shaped, fat and prickly green fruit piled on tables at the farmers market lately, that’s because it’s soursop season. In this Sunday’s On the Farm column, we report on its cancer healing properties as well as some chilly ideas for delicious consumption.

Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. Last Sunday, our article “Meat of the operation” ran in The Garden Island newspaper. While touring the facility, we were happy to learn that the cows are 100 percent grass-fed, with no antibiotics or hormones. Thanks to it being available at Times/Big Save, beef is now back on our family menu. I just can’t buy the corn-fed, factory-farmed stuff. I made a wonderful beef stew this week and will share the recipe soon. I want to make it one more time to get it absolutely perfect.

Last Wednesday, our article “Spring cleaning with juice” ran in The Garden Island newspaper. This is the third cleanse I have done, and I have to say it’s the easiest. Plus, the juice at Kauai Juice Company is extremely delicious. I buy single bottles to drink with dinner. Last night, as I took a sip of  Mintacolada I tried to find one word to describe the flavor. I could taste mint and pineapple but the word that came to me was juicy. Sounds silly, but the flavors are so mouth-watering, balanced and vibrant that juicy is the best description. Anyway … Continue Reading →

Kapaa Voted One of America’s Prettiest Towns

Forbes Magazine named Kapaa on Kauai’s Royal Coconut Coast as one of America’s prettiest towns. Contributing writer, John Gufflow said, “What we went looking for (were) towns seemingly custom-designed for soaking in the sights, with charming main streets, a variety of activities and beautiful vistas. Whether it’s the fresh air, authenticity or lack of skyscrapers, these enchanting locales deserve a spot on your travel to-do list.” Gufflow explained that Forbes relied on seasoned writers from a variety of national travel publications to come up with the top 15 towns. “To designate America’s most picturesque towns, we called on travel experts from Frommer’s, National Geographic, Fodor’s, and Midwest Living magazines, all of whom shared with us selections of what they consider to be among America’s prettiest towns.” Continue Reading →
