According to Pacific Business News, the owners of Brennecke’s Beach Broiler restaurant on Kauai paid $500,000 to connect county restrooms at Poipu Beach Park to a wastewater treatment plant as part of a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over the failure to close two large-capacity cesspools, EPA officials said Tuesday.

“We appreciate the initiative taken by Brennecke’s to provide beach-goers with improved wastewater treatment at the Poipu Beach Park,” Jared Blumenfeld, EPA’s regional administrator for the Pacific Southwest, said in a statement. “EPA will continue to pursue violators who fail to close their large cesspools to protect Hawaii’s vital coastal water resources.”

GIRFFGarden Island Range & Food Festival

As far as food festivals on Kauai go, it doesn’t get any more local than this. In its fourth season, the 2012 Garden Island Range & Food Festival (GIRFF) is a completely “in the moment” type of event because chefs receive their ingredients three days before the event.

As the 2012 farm chairperson and treasurer, Dan and I collected produce Wednesday, and it was delivered to the chefs yesterday. The Nov. 14 issue of MidWeek Kauai highlights the participating farmers, ranchers and chefs. I wrote about The Garden Cafe, who was scheduled to participate until they dropped out this past Wednesday. RumFire will be cooking the lamb that The Garden Cafe was supposed to use. Other than that, the article is accurate.

We made a video and blog post about Duane Shimogawa, owner of Aakukui Ranch and GIRFF ranch chair, called Fighting Superbugs with Antibiotic Free Beef. Check it out if you’d like to learn more about his grass-fed beef, and then sample it this Sunday!

Kauai Culinary Market

The Wednesday Kauai Culinary Market in the outdoor courtyard of The Shops at Kukuiula is one of my favorite farmers markets. The property is gorgeous, there are restaurants and shops lining the walkway, and lush landscaping with colorful flowers and towering palm trees. The market not only features Kauai farmers, but food artisans as well. There’s also live music, a beer and wine garden, and cooking demonstrations. The demonstrations feature local chefs, and farm fresh ingredients from the market. There is seating, and not only do guests get to ask questions, but they get to eat what’s made.

Aloha Mai Tai Friday! (OMG: December? Where did 2012 go?) Those Thanksgiving offerings seem incredibly reasonable to me. Our first Kauai visit was over a Thanksgiving holiday… went to a luau… good times… 😉

I know right! 2012 poof, gone. My tummy was grumbling typing those menus.
