Sharleen Andrade-Balmores was born and raised in Kauai where her family has been ranching for five generations. She will be selling gourmet cuts of beef from the Andrade Cattle Company under her company name The Rancher’s Daughter tomorrow at the Flavors of Kukuiula in Poipu. Here is her story, in her words.

I grew up around real cowboys and cattle ranching my entire life. My great-grandfather (of Spaniard decent) on my mother’s side was Antone Martian. He rode his horse everyday from his home in Kalaheo to work at the Koloa Plantation. When he married, he moved to Kekaha and worked as a cowboy for Kekaha Plantation. Back then, he made 10 cents an hour, and he would catch wild horses for extra money. Sometimes, he’d buy them for $18.00, train them on the beaches and through the kiawe trees of Kakaha and when the horses were ready, he would sell them for $26.00. Continue Reading →

Tasting Kauai received an email from some of our favorite farmers. It provides an update, and the email has been left intact (we added the links) because it provides such a heartfelt update as to what Sun and Lisa and their farm Kumu Aina are up to. The good news is, we can buy their superb produce at the farmers market again. Whooty Woot!

Thick lines form in front of their stand before the market opens, and customers have been known to fight over their produce. In April of this year, One Song Farm relocated from Moloaa to Kalihiwai and reemerged as Kumu Aina, or “land as teacher”. The couple will focus on educational workshops on growing organically and sustainably with an emphasis on building healthy soil. Lucky for us, they decided to grow a small market garden. Now, from Sun and Lisa. Continue Reading →

Several weeks ago, I bought a dozen farm fresh eggs at the farmers market. I didn’t open them up at the stand because I’ve grown accustomed to trusting local farmers. I just paid for them and put them in my bag. They were going into a Spanish omelet for dinner, along with some young onions. When I got home, I opened the recycled, grocery store carton, and was alarmed to see bits of dirt, and what I imagined to be poop, clinging to the eggs.

My first thought was, “UGH! There’s got to be salmonella on these shells! When I crack these eggs open, it’s going to get inside!” I carefully laid them in a sink full of water, and scrubbed them clean. Then I scrubbed my hands and the sink. I was horrified, and immediately called one of my favorite farmers. Continue Reading →
