Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. In Food, Fiestas at Paco’s Tacos House, that runs in our “Tastes of Kauai” column in today’s The Garden Island newspaper, you can learn what the brothers Aguilar have in store for Kapaa Art Walk (tomorrow) and Cinco de Mayo.  They have opened a new restaurant in Kapaa, so you’ll find out what they serve as well.

This Sunday, our “On the Farm” column explores an heirloom variety of eggplant and includes an excellent pupu recipe. You can get these rare eggplant starts from Heaven on Earth Starts at the Saturday Namahana farmers market and the Start Cart in front of Hoku Natural Foods Market.

We’ve added another Kauai food tour. Since we’ve received excellent feedback from our guests about A Taste of Kilohana, along with attentive service, the knowledge of our guide and the locally-sourced, off-the-menu lunch, we thought we’d serve up another! Now we offer A Culinary Romp Through Paradise, which takes place on a Friday, and for our hard-working residents, A Taste of Kilohana, which takes place on  two Saturdays a month. We also have our Farmers Market Tour, which takes place every Wednesday. Continue Reading →

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. In our “Tastes of Kauai” column in today’s The Garden Island newspaper, you can learn about the new cookbook From Kau Kau to Cuisine and Island Cookbook Then and Now. In the article, author and food historian Arnold Hiura shares his concern for the future of food. This Sunday, our “On the Farm” column shares some exciting news from Kauai Kunana Dairy as well as a recipe from Hukilau Lanai. Continue Reading →

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. We got back from Colorado late in the afternoon on Monday and hit the ground running Tuesday morning. We interviewed a cacao farmer at 10 a.m. and you can look for their story in our On The Farm column in this Sunday’s paper. Our Tastes of Kauai column, which runs in today’s TGIFriday edition, will share a unique look into a longtime favorite, Kilauea Bakery & Pau Hana Pizza. Continue Reading →

Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. We are still in Colorado visiting family. It’s pretty amazing to see my father and his three brothers come together. One uncle flew from Texas to California to pick up his 90-year-old brother and drive him to Colorado. My favorite aunt and her husband drove from Idaho as well. We have had a wonderful time reconnecting and sharing memories, all of wich seem to happen over a well made meal.

There’s no local avocados in Colorado, but in last Sunday’s, article “Avocado Advantage” I reported on four of Hawaii’s most popular avocados. The recipe for Avocado Banana Bread makes a moist, dense nutritious loaf. On Kauai, at the farmers market, you can get very large avocados for a dollar or two.

In Fresh and Local on Kauai’s Westside, I reported on MCS Grill, a new restaurant that serves local favorites as well as healthy options. I’m happy to have found them because Dan can hardly resist a big, juice burger, especially when it’s made with local, grass-fed beef and I appreciate being able to order lighter meals such as the Vegetarian Trio. We are also happy to have another dining option when we are on the Westside. Continue Reading →

NEWS:

Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. Last Sunday, our article “Crunch time with carrots” ran in The Garden Island newspaper.  I hope you get a chance to try the recipe and if you can use Kauai Juice Company’s kiawe-aged balsamic vinegar, all the better.

We didn’t have a story in the Wednesday edition. TGI is going from two food writers to one and there was a miscommunication. Our last story will be in this Wednesday’s edition before our “Tastes of Kauai” column gets moved to Fridays TGIFriday pullout. We’ve cooked up some tasty stories and we appreciate you sticking with us! Continue Reading →
