Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. Yesterday was our 15th wedding anniversary and we decided to just relax and go with the flow. Since we are so blessed by our work and get to eat out often, we spent a lazy morning at the beach with the dogs. Last Wednesday, I found a new farm stand at the Kapaa farmers market, which sells produce by donation! I bought one of their gorgeous, huge Napa cabbages and we had it last night along with some kalua pork, steamed white rice, Champagne and dessert from Cakes by Kristin. Dan always gets a couple of cupcakes and I had the roasted pineapple crostata. I just can’t resist shortcrust pastry filled with fresh fruit!

In today’s The Garden Island newspaper, we highlight a line of convenience foods produced by Maui-based Life Foods. Their vegan products are guilt-free because they are made with local, organic ingredients, no common allergens (soy, dairy or gluten) and they’re now available on Kauai. Tomorrow, Melissa “Mo” Gregory, Tasting Kauai’s director of sales, will share her take on Life Foods. As a mother of two children who feeds her family meat-and potato-meals, she wasn’t sure how her family would like vegan food. It’s her first blog post for us and we’re happy to share her “mom” perspective.

Pumpkins are lining the tables at the farmers market right now. This Sunday, we showcase the Amira pumpkin from Olana Organic Farm and include a  quinoa pumpkin pilaf recipe. Continue Reading →

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. Today, read about what will be served at this Sunday’s Taste of Hawaii in “A Taste of Hawaii for food lovers” found in our “Tastes of Kauai” column in The Garden Island newspaper. If you want a complete listing of what will be served, check out our blog post “2014 Taste of Hawaii“. This Sunday, our “On the Farm” column features organic watermelon from Growing Strong Farm. Yum!

Kauai Beer Company

Kauai Beer Company is adding food to their craft brew menu. Building on the success of Truck Stop Thursday (see listing below under ongoing), we now have Finally Friday. Tonight’s menu is listed under events, but here’s what Larry, their “marketing guy” has to say:

“We are starting the food on Friday and we will work on that menu first. It will be primarily lighter offerings, allowing people to double up on a pork slider or to get a panini sandwich and salad, but each item will be priced somewhere between $9 and $5, staying with the theme of Finally Friday. We are thinking about carrying through with the nightly theme idea starting with the  place to go after work, at the start of the weekend. We’ve got a great idea for Saturday and I know it will work like a charm. When we get closer on that one, I will let you know, but we first want to get Friday up and running. Similarly, we have something in mind for Wednesday. Somewhere in this progression, likely after Finally Friday is humming along, we will introduce cocktails.”

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. Today, get an update on our weight loss progress while learning about healthy dining options on Kauai in our “Trucking Delicious food in Hanalei” article that runs in our “Tastes of Kauai” column in The Garden Island newspaper. Trucking Delicious elevates the humble grilled cheese sandwich, and we are certainly happy t have another fast and delicious option on the north shore.

This Sunday, our “On the Farm” column in The Garden Island newspaper covers Moloaa Organicaa and organic papayas. I’ve never met a grocery-store papaya that I likes, but these babies are sumptuous: fragrant, mildly sweet and juicy. Our article will list the many places you can purchase them. Continue Reading →
