Owners Dan and Ellen O’Connell are a delightful couple whose passion for wine is infectious, their knowledge is vast, and the service is friendly. A rose by any other name is still a rose. Unless you add an accent over the “e” and then you have Rosé. This is a very mysterious and beautiful wine that the French have long been celebrating. Provence, France is the birthplace of the Rosé and it is known for its pale blush hues of orange and pink.This week we want to celebrate the end of summer with a review of an American-style Rosé from J Vineyards & Winery located in the Russian River Valley in California. Founded by Judy Jordan, a second-generation vintner whose passion for viticulture came from growing up around the family business, Jordan Winery. She started out making sparkling wine but after hiring innovative winemaker Melissa Stackhouse she shifted her focus to many other varietals.
Today we are reviewing her Russian River Vin Gris which is a Pinot Noir Rosé. The distinctive pale salmon color combined with lively flavors and aromas of strawberry, cherry fruit and dusty rose petals make this the perfect summer wine. There is a nice acidity and structure that will pair elegantly with a spinach salad topped with pecans and strawberries. It is also an amazing accompaniment to lightly sautéed fresh fish, served along side a garden salad dressed with savory rosemary vinaigrette.When entertaining, we like to start the evening off with a beautiful Rosé wine, as it stimulates the palate just enough to get your guests in the celebratory mood. The next time you are in The Wine Shop don’t forget to bring home a bottle of Rosé and savor the flavors.
