Aloha from The Wine Shop in Old Koloa Town! We are so excited to unveil Winesday with The Wine Shop, which will be featured every Wednesday on TastingKauai.com. Each week we will showcase an interesting and exceptional wine that we carry in the shop that will please your palate and pocketbook. We love to explore new wines and try varietals that are unique and fun. We look forward to sharing a great assortment wines on this blog, and if there is something you want to learn more about please leave a comment. This week’s highlighted wine is Boom Boom! a Syrah from the Columbia Valley in the state of Washington. We just returned from an amazing wine tour there and esteemed winemaker Charles Smith’s Boom Boom! was one of our favorites.Charles Smith is definitely not your conventional wine maker. He started out managing rock bands in Europe and through his travels discovered a craze for fine wine and great cuisine. After moving back to the states and meeting a Frenchman with similar passions, he released 330 cases of his first wine, 1999 K Syrah and the rest is history. He has won countless awards and prides himself on his innovative names and packaging. The Velvet Devil Merlot, Kung Fu Girl Riesling and Broncho Malbec are just a few of his current selections.
So what makes the 2012 Boom Boom! Syrah so fabulous? We loved it for its explosive flavor of dark cherry with hints of lavender, fresh picked herbs and tobacco. It pairs perfectly with a roasted leg of lamb or kalua pork and roasted vegetables. This affordable wine is a great choice to bring to a dinner party or a sunset picnic at the beach and the cost is only $21.95.
The Wine Shop is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. On the first Saturday of each month from 4 to 7 p.m., we host monthly wine tastings.
