Tasting Kauai and Zendy Web Studio just released an app for our Kauai restaurant guide. The interactive mobile app is available for iPhone
and Android smartphones and tablets. I’ve been wanting to convert our restaurant guidebook into an app for years, and I’m grateful to Yacine Merzouk for making that dream come true!
Just like the book, the app includes mini-profiles of chefs and restaurant owners and their food. Filters enable users to search by location as well as for breakfast, lunch, dinner, price range, dress code, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, my favorite dining spots, and more. “How to use this app” offers an overview; how restaurants are chosen; and definitions of useful icons. A map shows nearby restaurants that are listed in our guidebook and a “more” tab includes a Hawaiian food glossary and an introduction to the Hawaiian language.
Flexibility in revising apps enable us to make updates faster than we can with print and ebook versions. So if you download the app, expect free updates every month.
An you may already know, I highlight those who are dedicated to real Kauai cuisine — from food trucks to the fine dining. I have a passion for sustainable agriculture and applaud those who make the effort to source fresh, locally grown food and prepare meals from scratch.
I’m really excited about this. There is so much great food on Kauai and I’m thrilled that it’s now digitally accessible. I find myself using it all the time. It’s instant gratification because it’s always current and filters make it extremely easy to find what I’m looking for, and I wrote the book!
The app can be downloaded at app.TastingKauai.com for $9.99, or by searching for “Tasting Kauai” in the App Store. As usual, a portion of all proceeds are donated to the Hawaii Foodbank, Kauai Branch.
$4.99 or even $5.99 and I would have definitely downloaded the app; $9.99 is just out of the question. Sorry, Marta, even given how good your work is.
Excellent idea!
I downloaded and love it. However, you missed the Green Pig and George of the Jungle, two places that source Kauai food. Any reason?
Mahalo for your comments!
Eleanor, The Green Pig and George of da Jungle are on our list to check out and they may appear in future updates. We do favor those who source locally, but there are many other requirements before it gets included in the book, such as taste, vibe and value. Please send your feedback to sales@tastingkauai.com. We’d love to know what you think after you’ve used it for awhile!
Mahalo Napua! We think it’s an excellent idea as well. =)
Brian, David and Susan,
We understand price concerns, but a lot of work goes into the app on a regular basis. We believe we found a balance between covering costs, making a living and making it attractive for users. The cost is competitive with similar apps and it’s updated monthly and those updates are free. Brian, I appreciate your thoughts on the quality of my work and I’m grateful you all took the time to share your thoughts.
