Roy’s Poipu

Matthew Dela Cruz, executive chef of Roy’s Poipu Bar & Grill, is resigning. The chef makes Kauai proud, having graduated from the Culinary Program at Kauai Comminity College. He began at Roy’s 12-years ago, and has been the executive chef for the last five. We wish you the best Matt, where ever you go, and whatever you do! For more on Matt or Roy’s Poipu, check out my MidWeek Kauai article.

Prince Humehume Community Pot Luck

Kanuikapono Charter School, 6:30 p.m.

Join Kanuikapono Charter School for the Friday Drive-In Movie Night featuring, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Community pot luck: bring your own plate, fork, cup, napkin, beach chairs and blankets. This is to support the cast staring and producing “Prince Humehume: Heir to the Kingdom of Kauai“. Young children must be accompanied by parents.

Learn more about this play from the students involved in the production. Come to support and encourage them. Make new friends to make up your Table For Ten at the evening show on Saturday, May 19th. Feel free to bring instruments and invite friends.

Prince Humehume: Heir to the Kingdom of Kauai

10th Anniversary Fundraiser for Kanuikapono Public Charter School,Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center, 6 p.m.

Kanuikapono Public Charter School will perform a multi-media theater production of the history of Kauai through the eyes of Kauai’s Prince George Humehume Kaumualii “The Lost Prince”. The production will include beautiful images of the creation of Hawaii with traditional Hawaiian hula, mele and oli interpreted by the Kanuikapono student body. This well-researched performance will not only entertain but it will also educate the audience.

Dinner is prepared by Chef Nalani Kaea Pua. Chef Nalani will be serving deconstructed lau lau with lomi salmon, and topped with a poi vinaigrette drizzle; kale salad with Kilauea greens and poi vinaigrette; kalua pork sliders with honey barbecue sauce; kiawe grilled chicken over brown rice with lilikoi wasabi cream sauce. And for desert, mashed ‘u’ala with haupia glaze.

There will also be a silent auction and live entertainment by Iris in Bloom.

Ticket price is $75 per adult ($80 per person at the door), and $50 per student (ages 5 to 18, $55 per student at the door). Children under 5 are free, if they are seated with their parent. There is a show only ticket available for $20 ($25 per person at the door).

Kanuikapono is a K-12 public charter school located in Anahola, Hawaii. The school serves a predominantly Hawaiian population, and uses indigenous Hawaiian teaching methodologies including hula, mele and oli, combined with 21st century technologies to provide students with a unique and powerful curriculum. Kanuikapono is funded primarily by the Hawaii State Department of Education, Kamehameha Schools, and public and private grants.

Backyard Aquaponics

Become food independent and self-sufficient while saving money and resources in this introduction to backyard aquaponics.
 Learn how to build the ultimate backyard set-up easily and effectively using innovative, and creative techniques and energy-efficient equipment. Learn which system is better for you. We have 4 systems:

  • New Film Technique
  • Ebb and Flow
  • Dutch Bucket with drip irrigation and siphons
  • Deep Water Culture

Build your system, and start experimenting with different crops. 
Learn how to:

  • Germinate seeds on all kinds of different media for each system
  • Maximize space, nutrients and resources.
Identify which types of fish work better for our climate
  • Build siphons for aeration with new and/or recycled materials

Two sessions include five Golden Sunfish/Tilapia Fingerlings $75 per person, plus $10 material fee. Workshops are held in Puhi, Lihue.
