NEWS:
Koloa Community Market
The Koloa Community Market is now closed. “A variety of circumstances pulled us in this direction,” writes market manager Pattie White in an email. “The timing, especially now that the summer tourism has declined, has considerably reduced foot-traffic. I believe the location and size proved to be a seasonal market, so who knows? Maybe next spring I’ll try again and have it remain open only through to end of August 2013.”
Panda Express
Yesterday, the Star Advertiser reported that sexual harassment charges have been filed against the Panda Express in Kauai. Three teenaged workers filed a suit with The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claiming that a male supervisor sexually abused at least three teenage females since 2008. The corporate offices of Panda Express declined to comment on the pending litigation.
State-wide Drought
CBS News reports that Kauai has joined Oahu, Big Island and Maui in an ongoing drought. After eight straight weeks of severe drought during the growing season, the U.S. Agriculture Department has designated Kauai County as a disaster area. The declaration will give Kauai farmers access to assistance.
Tasting Kauai
On a happier note, Tasting Kauai is honored to be featured in this week’s edition of MidWeek Kauai. It has been an honor and a privilege to write about Kauai’s food growers and makers for MidWeek Kauai, and I’m happy to provide extended coverage here on our website, as well as culinary tours that showcase the best of Kauai’s food.
The Right Slice
Waves from Kauai’s The Right Slice made it all the way to New York. A New York Times article shows Sandy in her bakery with the quote “I make the crust by hand. I make the filling by hand. But to build my business, I need a hand.”
Sandy is being featured in a UPS marketing campaign for small business solutions. She’ll be featured in print (including Martha Stewart Living), as well as television, radio and online ads. Without a national bookstore on Kauai, Sandy is having a hard time getting the October issue of Martha Stewart Living. So if you subscribe, the next time you get a slice, consider giving her your well read copy.

Kauai Culinary Tour
8 a.m. to 3 p.m., $130
We have so much fun on our day-long culinary tours. We get to share the best of Kauai with people who care about good food, and where it comes from. We visit chef’s gardens, fruit farms, sit in on an outside cooking demonstration at the Marriott, and enjoy a four-course lunch made with Kauai Grown ingredients. And because we believe good food should be served with good beverages, we end the day with artesian beverages made on Kauai.
Stephanie Krieger, owner of Nani Moon Mead, is featured in this month’s culinary tour. She’ll close the meadery and give us an exclusive tour and tasting, and once you’ve sampled them all, you get to take a bottle of your favorite home.
Stephanie makes her mead with local fruit, honey and spices in small batches they day the fruit arrives. Each variety is lush, and tastes of Kauai! For more information, visit our Culinary Tours page.
ONGOING:
